In-situ measurements of soil density are often performed through volume sand replacement method or balloon method with water. CONTROLS offers a complete range of equipment fully compliant with ASTM, AASTHO, NF and BS Standards. Bearing Plate Apparatus are used for estimating the bearing capacity of a soil under field loading conditions for a specific loading plate. They also cover load tests on soil and flexible pavement components, for use in evaluation and design of airport and highway pavements. CONTROLS provides a vast range of bearing plate capacity equipment fully conforming to BS, ASTM and CNR standards, available as either analog, digital or electronic versions.

Description

 

For the determination of the in-situ density of well bonded soil according to NF specifications. A metal cylinder is filled with water which is then pumped into a rubber membrane, mounted on the base of the cylinder, which take up the hole previously made in the soil pavement. The water pressure is controlled by a pressure gauge and the volume of the balloon is measured on the graduated piston stem. Two versions available: 3000 and 6000 ml capacity. The apparatus are supplied complete with base plate, 3 locking clamps and 6 reinforced membranes.

The bearing plate test determines the soil bearing capacity by the application of an increasing pressure on a foundation formed by a circular plate loaded against a reaction frame and measuring the associated vertical displacement (settlement).
Results are typically used for calculating the soil stiffness in term of Deformation Modulus and Subgrade Reaction Modulus.

Technical Specifications
Hydraulic assembly
3 different capacities are available (100, 200 and 500 kN). All models use a dual flow hand pump connected to the cylinder with flexible hydraulic hose 3 meters long.
The assembly comprises two spherical seats: the lower transfers the reaction load to the plate; the upper, mounted at the top end of the loading column, is magnetic for simplifying the test execution.
Extension rods are included for closing the gap between upper spherical seat and reaction frame.

Plate and measuring tunnel
The loading plates are made in high strength steel. All plates include practical handles for easy transportation and can be placed in a pyramid arrangement to ensure rigidity. The plate range is composed by:
  • 160 mm (6”) dia. x 25 mm (1″)
  • 300 mm (12″) dia. x 25 mm (1″)
  • 456 mm (18″) dia. x 25 mm (1″)

Measuring bridge
Made in aluminium alloy, lightweight, transportable, quick to assembly on site, features 2 external supports and in-built spirit level. The main measuring bar is 2.5 meter long and can be expanded with extensions up to 5.5 meters total length.

Load and displacement (settlement) measurement
3 alternatives measuring options are available:
  • Analogue configuration: with triple scale manometer dia. 200 mm and 30 mm x 0.01 mm dial gauges. Detail of the triple scale:
    • 100 kN: force 0-100 kN (div. 0.5 kN); oil pressure 0-690 Bar (div. 2.5 Bar) and specific load 0-1.41 MN/m2 (div. 0.01 MN/m2)

Note: specific load values refer to a bearing plate with 300 mm dia.

  • Digital configuration: with digital readout unit (battery operated), built-in pressure transducer and digital gauges 25.4 mm x 0.001 mm
  • Electronic configuration with pressure transducer and 50 mm stroke displacement transducers connected to a DATALOG8 readout unit, battery operated.
The configuration with a single displacement measurement includes the measuring tunnel to detect the settlement of the plate perfectly in the centre and coaxially with load.

Packing
All complete testing kits 100 and 200 kN cap. outfits include a wheeled plastic carrying case housing the following parts:
  • hydraulic assembly (pump, cylinder, extension rods)
  • plates dia. 160 mm (6”) and 300 mm (12″)
  • load and displacement devices
Additional plates dia. 456 mm (18”); 608 mm (24″) and 760 mm (30″) are packed in a separate wooden box, also included in the outfit. The hydraulic assembly 500 kN cap. is instead packed separately.
Measuring bridge 2.5 m and extensions may be optionally housed in a wooden carrying case available as accessory.

Hydraulic assembly

The assembly comprises two spherical seats: the lower transfers the reaction load to the plate; the upper, mounted at the top end of the loading column, is magnetic for simplifying the test execution.
Extension rods are included to close the gap between upper spherical seat and reaction frame.
The entire hydraulic assembly is housed in a plastic wheeled carrying case standard included.

Plate and measuring tunnel
The loading plate is made in high strength structural steel 300 mm diameter. The measuring tunnel, being the reference point for the measuring bridge, is mounted on this plate.
A protection jig is fitted on the steel plate to prevent any buckling of the hydraulic cylinder.
Additional 600 and 762 m dia. plates are available as accessories.

Measuring bridge
Made in aluminium alloy, lightweight, transportable, quick to assembly on site, features 3 adjustable supports and an in-built spirit level. The measuring arm adopts a zero friction – linear bearing solution. The displacement (settlement) measuring device (dial gauge or electronic transducer) is tightly fixed on the arm.
The telescopic arm, with 120 mm stroke, allows precise adjustment of the reference point at the centre of the plate.
The entire measuring bridge assembly can be housed inside a wooden carrying case available as accessory (35-T1100/BC)
 
Load and displacement (settlement) measurement
Two alternatives measuring options are available:
  • Analogue configuration with triple scale manometer 200 mm dia. and 30×0.01 mm dial gauge (other gauges with different stroke and resolution are available as alternative)
  • Electronic configuration with high precision load cell and 50 mm stroke displacement transducer connected to the DATALOG8 readout unit, battery operated.

Used to estimate the bearing capacity of a soil under field loading conditions on flexible pavement components .
The relatively lightweight (68 kg in total) and small dimensions of the apparatus make it very easy to use and to move from one place to another. The measuring bridge made from aluminium alloy, is very light and has telescopic extensions so It can be positioned in a few minutes with minimum effort. The remote load control and gauge are mounted on the pump and it is not necessary to go near the platen for recording the load.  The deformations are measured with three dial indicators.

The verification of the degree of compaction can be determinate on site by a simple procedure consisting essentially in removing and weighing a part of compacted soil and replacing in the hole with sand by a simple apparatus recording the volume of sand and then calculating the density of the removed soil.
We propose three models to be selected conforming to the size of grained soils.
The sand pouring cylinders and calibration cans are made of cast aluminium and precisely machined. The tray is made of plated sheet steel.
