The flash point is the lowest temperature at which a flame causes the vapors from a material to catch fire, as a flash, under specific test conditions. The lower the flash point temperature, the higher the susceptibility of the material to catch fire. In other words, the higher the flash point temperatures, the safer the material. The most common flash point methods for binders are Tag Closed Cup test, Cleveland Open Cup test and Pensky-Martens Closed Cup test.

Pensky Martens digital flash tester 81-B0135/A
Description
This instrument covers the determination of the flash point of petroleum products in the temperature range from 40 to 360°C.
The tester covers both “procedure A” (applicable to distillate fuels, lubricating oils) and “procedure B” (residual fuel oils, cutback residual, mixtures of petroleum liquids with solids) of ASTM D93.
The instrument is heated by an electronic thermoregulator, mounted on a case painted with anti-acid epoxidic products. It is supplied complete with a calibrated brass test cup, cover with gas ignition device allowing to ignite the testing sample by a manual trip-opening, motor stirrer for Procedure “A” or “B”, air bath made in brass with external stainless steel calotte, cooling fan, digital thermometer with PT100A glass probe, gas tube 5 metres long and 30 mbar gas reducer.
It has to be connected to a suitable gas source to function (i.e. gas cylinder).
