Penetrometer, Field Inspection

Dynamic cone penetrometer, complete set 16-T0012/D

CONTROLS provides a wide variety of pocket penetrometers used to obtain quickly and easily a preliminary measurement of shear strength of cohesive and semi-cohesive soils. These portable units are versatile, easy to use and provide quick and accurate results. Also included in the range is the Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) designed for a rapid in-situ measurement of the structural properties of existing road pavements constructed with unbound material.

The section includes testing equipment for field inspection, such as Vane tester and Torvane tester for obtain a quick and efficient method for determining shear strength values of cohesive soils and a rapid check of the stability of foundations, excavations and trenches in clay. Water level indicators are also available for determining the water level in boreholes, wells and other open underground structures.

DCP - Dynamic Cone Penetrometer

Used for in-situ measurement of the structural properties of unbound material pavement.

Standards ASTM D6951

Description

This apparatus in used for the rapid in-situ measurement of the structural properties of existing road pavements constructed with unbound materials. Continuous measurements can be made down to a depth of approximately 850 mm or, when extension shafts and rods are used (available as accessories), to a recommended maximum depth of 2 m. Where pavements layers have different strengths the boundaries can be identified and the thickness of the layers determined. Correlations have been established in earlier work (Van Vuuren, Klein and Van Herden, Smith and Pratt) between  the Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) and California Bearing Ratio (CBR) so that results can be interpreted and compared with CBR specifications.

*PRO-COMPACT closed-loop is an innovative mechanical and electronic control that combines orthogonality of the load, pendulum motion of the head and sinusoidal non-friction forward-reverse carriage movement. This results in an optimally compacted sample that features Planarity Regularity and hOmogeneity (PRO). The combined load/displacement compaction procedure provides at the beginning of the test a controlled displacement compaction, which can grant a flat surface of the compacted slab, followed by a load compaction phase, which can replicate the real compaction on the road surface.
