Specimen Preparation

Detail of cutting blade
Rock specimen preparation is paramount regardless of what material you are testing or the level of sophistication of your rock testing system. A poor quality specimen can only produce misleading results, wasting valuable time and resources. As such, precise and accurate uniaxial or triaxial testing can only be achieved with high quality specimens. Wykeham Farrance offers a full range of precise specimen preparation equipment (coring, cutting and grinding machines) in order to ensure that you begin your testing with the best possible specimens.

Concrete/Rock Specimen Grinding Machine

Used to grind and polish concrete specimens, natural stones, ceramic materials, etc.

Standards EN 12390-2 ASTM D4543

Grinding machine (55-C0201/B)
Description

Laboratory Core Trimmer, Cut-off and Grinding Machine

The laboratory Core trimmer machine allows you to prepare a rock core specimen

Standards ASTM D4543 EN 12390-1 ISRM

Laboratory core trimmer and cut-off machine
Description

The laboratory Core Trimmer machine is used for the preparation of rock specimens for strength and deformation testing from block samples or from drill core obtained in the field.

How to prepare the rock core specimen
The laboratory Core trimmer machine allows you to prepare a rock core specimen according to the following procedure:

1. Specimen Cutting: Core sample rock is clamped in the jig for holding and feeding during the cutting process. During the cutting phase, water is continuously recirculated for blade cooling and flush cuttings. The precise manual feeding system moves the blade horizontally. Once the specimen is cut, back off the blade and turn off the saw. Unclamp the specimen, reposition and repeat the procedure on the opposite side.

2. Grinding: In order to reach the flatness and parallelism tolerances, a grinding phase is usually required. The rock core specimen is again clamped with the holding jig and is ground using the diamond impregnated grinding wheel mounted on the opposite side of the machine. The specimen ends are typically colored with a waterproof marker, prior to the start of grinding, in order to monitor where material is being removed. Grind each end one at a time. In this phase, the cooling water system is used to cool the specimen and grinding wheel.

Main Features

  • HIGH PRECISON: full compliance with the Standards for end surfaces flatness, parallelism and axis perpendicularity.
  • TIME SAVING: thanks to the double blade system.
  • trimming and surface grinding with the same machine without the need to replace the blades between trimming and grinding operations.
  • WIDE RANGE OF SAMPLE PREPARATION: specimens can be obtained from core rock 75 mm diameter x 225 mm length and regular specimens can be obtained from irregular samples of maximum dimension 75mm height x 65mm width x 225 mm length. Includes a clamping system to hold  core and irregular pieces firmly in place.
  • ALL IN ONE SYSTEM: Integrated cooling water system with high performance water recirculation pump.
  • LONG LIFE: corrosion-resistant stainless steel water tank and clamping system.
  • SAFETY DEVICE: protection cover conforming to CE directive with interlocked safety switch which prevents access to the blades when it is in motion. 24 V control front panel preventing electrical hazards related to water

*PRO-COMPACT closed-loop is an innovative mechanical and electronic control that combines orthogonality of the load, pendulum motion of the head and sinusoidal non-friction forward-reverse carriage movement. This results in an optimally compacted sample that features Planarity Regularity and hOmogeneity (PRO). The combined load/displacement compaction procedure provides at the beginning of the test a controlled displacement compaction, which can grant a flat surface of the compacted slab, followed by a load compaction phase, which can replicate the real compaction on the road surface.
