Wheel Tracking Machines

Wheel Tracking machines have been developed to perform Rutting / Permanent Deformation tests. IPC Global’s range includes DynaTrack, a single wheel model for EN testing with air, and DWT Double Wheel Tracker, able to cover a wide range of tests including EN and AASHTO Hamburg Wheel Tracker, with PC control and possibility to perform the test both in air and in water.

DWT Double Wheel Tracker, EN version
Description
The wheel tracking test is used for determining the susceptibility of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) to deform under load by measuring the rut depth formed by repeated passes of a loaded wheel at a fixed temperature.  Two versions available as prescribed by EN 12697-22 Small Size device: specimen conditioning in air and in air or water.
Both versions can be upgraded with automatic  system which lift one of the wheel from the specimen that has reached the rut target continuing the test on the other specimen. See Upgrading options Automatic wheel lifting mechanism.
We also produce Wheel Trackers conforming to AASHTO T324 standard and a universal version conforming to both AASHTO and EN standards. See Hamburg type double wheel tracker and Universal AASHTO/EN double wheel tracker.

The DWT Double Wheel Tracker can be used as part of your Superpave performance based testing program.

Machine body
Sheet steel, powder coated. Trasparent sliding door.

Loaded wheel system
The EN versions are fitted with double solid rubber tyre, 203 mm dia. x 50 mm wide.
The wheel load is 700 N. The system includes a motorized lifting system for raising the wheel assembly at the end of the test.

Wheel tracking carriage
The wheel is moved 230 mm backwards and forwards on the top of the slab, which is fixed. The speed is adjustable via the PC from 20 to 30 cycles per minute (40 to 60 passes). The longest slab dimension is oriented to the wheel’s direction of travel. Special slab moulds for circular samples obtained from coring or gyratory compactors are also available. See accessories.

Temperature control system
The EN prescribes either air or water environment. A water level of about 20 mm above the sample has to be maintained. Where a heated air environment is specified, the specimen, during testing, must be maintained at uniform and constant specified temperature ± 1°C. The DWT Double Wheel Trackers fully satisfy and exceed the above requirements: the temperature accuracy is ± 0.5°C.

Impression measurement system
Each wheel is fitted with RUT DEPTH transducers for measuring deformationsfrom 0 to 40 mm ±0.01 mm.

DWT Hamburg Double Wheel Tracker, model 78-PV31A16
Description
The wheel tracking test is used for determining the susceptibility of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) to deform under load by measuring the rut depth formed by repeated passes of a loaded wheel at a fixed temperature.  We also produce  Wheel Trackers conforming to EN 12697-22 standard and a Universal version conforming to both AASHTO and EN Standards. Two versions are available with full access to the water bath or complete with clear trasparent sliding doors, water bath covers and automatic water filling and leveling system.

Double Wheel Tracker DWT, Universal version
Description
The wheel tracking test is used for determining the susceptibility of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) to deform under load by measuring the rut depth formed by repeated passes of a loaded wheel at a fixed temperature. 

This universal version complies either to AASHTO or EN standards being equipped with both stainless steel and rubber wheels, and performing the test in air or water. This solution is particularly suitable for research laboratories.
This  version can be upgraded with automatic system which lift one of the wheel from the specimen that has reached the rut target continuing the test on the other specimen. See Upgrading options Automatic wheel lifting mechanism.

The Double Wheel Tracker can be used as part of your Superpave performance based testing program.

This Universal model is fitted with double stainless steel wheel, 203 mm dia. x 47 mm wide, and double solid rubber tyre, 203 mm dia. x 50 mm wide.
The wheel load is adjustable in 100 N steps from 700 to 1500 N (for 77-PV33D05-06 only). The system includes a motorized lifting system of the wheel assembly at the end of the test.

The AASHTO Hamburg type Standard states that the test must be performed in a water bath over a range of 25 to 70°C ± 1.0°C, whilst the EN requires either air or water environment. In both systems a water level of about 20 mm above the sample has to be maintained. Where a heated air environment is specified, the specimen, during testing, must be maintained at uniform and constant specified temperature ± 1° C.  All versions fully satisfy and exceed  the above requirements: the temperature accuracy is ±0.5°C.

Temperature controlled cabinet
The Universal AASTHO/EN versions feature an inbuilt temperature controlled cabinet for testing in air or in water, designed to avoid condensation problem (in water testing) and prevent overtemperature which may damage the mechanical parts or alter the transducer accuracy. Furthermore the system ensure thermal stability and provides rapid test start when the conditioned temperature has been reached.

Impression measurement system
Each wheel is fitted with linear transducer measurement system for deformations 0 to 50mm ±0.01mm.

DYNA-TRACK Single wheel tracker
Description
The wheel tracking apparatus consists of a loaded wheel, which bears on a sample held on a moving table. The table reciprocates with simple harmonic motion through a distance of 230 ± 5 mm with a frequency of 53 passes (± 1%) per minute. For reasearch purposes the test speed can be adjusted by inverter control. The wheel is fitted with a solid rubber tyre of outside diameter 200 mm. The wheel load under standard conditions is 700 ± 10 N. The wheel tracker is fitted with a temperature controlled cabinet with a temperature range from environment to 65°C ± 1.0°C.The sample may be either a 200 mm diameter core or a 300 x 400 mm slab of asphaltic mixture from 25mm to 100 mm thick. A 25 mm stroke LVDT transducer is included for monitoring rut depth in the centre of a sample during a test to better than 0.1 mm. The deformation and sample temperature is recorded by the internal data acquisition and control system, then sent to the Windows® compatible software. The Dyna – Track Single Wheel Tracker can be used as part of your Superpave performance based testing program.

78-PV3/KIT DWT Wheel Tracker calibration tool is a verification and calibration device for your IPC Global DWT Double Wheel Tracker.

The kit includes a full range of calibration and verification devices, including:

– A high-resolution encoder (with traceable calibration certificate) with data acquisition module, connection to PC, PC software and laptop, to measure and record all the wheel movement parameters, such as the RMSE (Root-Mean Square Error) to measure the real sinusoidal movement (based on the specifications from NCHRP Project 20-07 Task 361, now included in AASHTO T324-2019), wheel position and speed, and wheel speed at center. All the wheel movement data are then recorded and visualized with the included software, and a comprehensive verification report including all the data for further verifications (see below for details) can be issued.

– Shaped metal specimen conforming to the specification of AASHTO T324-2019 Section X2 and Figure X1.1 to verify and calculate the RMSE of the rut measurement in the 11-points.

– A 3500 N capacity load cell, with spherical seat and readout unit (with traceable calibration certificate), to verify and calibrate the load on the wheel.

– A digital thermometer with probe (with traceable calibration certificate) to measure the temperature of water or air.

– Adapters and spacers for use with IPC Global Double Wheel Tracker.

– Laptop PC with dedicated software

– Carrying case in hard plastic

The kit allows to provide a comprehensive verification and calibration of the wheel tracker to all the specifications included in AASHTO T324-2019 and EN 12697-22 Small Device (apart from wheel rubber hardness), or to periodically check the performances of the Wheel Tracker machine. The kit has been designed for use with IPC Global DWT Double Wheel Tracker but it can be adapted for use with equipment from other manufacturers.
